How to Not Turn Towards Food When Everything Feels Like it is Going Wrong:
Ground Yourself
Breathe, become aware of your senses and become present.
Everything is the Way it is
Remind yourself and recognize that everything is the way it is. You are only in control of the way you respond and what you are doing in this present moment.
Become Aware of Your Thoughts
Notice the thoughts that come up as you go to reach for the food when you are feeling overwhelmed by life.
Re-frame
Write down alternative thoughts that would be more helpful in the situation. How could you take a more problem solving approach?
Compassion
Be kind to yourself as you start unlearning this coping mechanism. It takes time and persistence.
In Closing:
Breaking the habit of turning towards food in tough times is a journey. Be patient with yourself. By staying present, taking control of your responses, and adopting a problem-solving mindset, you're on the path to healthier coping mechanisms. Celebrate small wins and remember, progress matters more than perfection. With each mindful choice, you're building resilience and gaining control over how you face life's uncertainties.
