6 Free Exercises You Can do Right Now to Improve The Way You Feel

1) Write Down What is Going on in Your Head

When you take the time to write things out and get them out of your head it can really help alleviate some of those feelings. It can do this because it can bring some order to the thoughts that are going on in your head.

It also gives you the opportunity to understand why you may be feeling average. From here you can start to think about solutions or ways forward from certain thoughts/ situations which are not making you feel good.

2) Write Down 5 Things You Are Grateful For/ Looking Forward to

Writing down some of the things we are grateful for can help remind us of all of the amazing things we have in our life. It can help make us feel happier as we think about these things.

Think of all the little things that make you smile (not just the big things): take the time to really appreciate these things.

stop worrying about what others think of you

3) Go Outside For Atleast 5 Minutes

Spending time outside can be amazing for our moods; but make sure you are present. Take it all in with your senses (sight, smell, hearing and touch). Really ground yourself and take notice.

Studies show that people have higher levels of serotonin on bright and sunny days: so make sure you take the time to get outside as much as you can to improve your mood.

This is such a simple thing you can do to improve the way you feel, but we often forget about it!

4) Speak to someone

Connection is powerful and feeling connected allows us to relate and seek comfort from others: which can help improve the way we feel. Similar to writing it down, speaking to someone allows us to get our thoughts out of our head and to work through them. Getting someone else’s perspective or reassurance can also really help us feel understood.

Overall, talking to someone can really help us feel less alone in our feelings and be able to get a different perspective on things that may be on our minds.

5) Do Something You Enjoy Doing

What do you love doing? Take some time out to do this. This could be reading, doing a puzzle, playing a game, watching a TV show you love - just give yourself some grace.

6) Listen to Uplifting Music

Music can affect our mood a lot! So put on your favourite (uplifting) music and listen to it. Have a wee dance if you feel up to it! (this is also amazing for our mood and can release feel good hormones).

Music is processed in the same area of your brain that emotions and your overall mood is (the amygdala): so you can see why it can have a big impact!

Make sure to avoid music which you know is going to feed the mood you are in: keep it upbeat!

In Closing:

We all have those days were we are not feeling as great and it is okay to feel off. Having some things that we know will improve our mood can be really beneficial to bring us out of that funk!

I hope you find some of these exercises helpful!
