How to Step up and Become The Person You Want to be in 5 Steps
1) Become The Person You Want to be - Growth Mindset
Make the decision to create the changes that you need to.
Firstly, you need to recognize the power that you hold over your life: you get to choose how you move forward and only you can do this. You can choose to let life keep going the way it is OR you can decide to start making changes and moving things in a different direction. It really does not take a lot to move in a different direction either: one new habit or action a day can completely change the trajectory of your life in a few months’ time (give or take!).
So, DECIDE you are going to start creating changes. Stop waiting for something to happen so you can begin, now is the perfect time the become the person you want to be.
2) Become The Person You Want to be - Find Your WHY For Making These Changes
Ask yourself why it is important for you to start creating changes. What impact is it going to have on other areas of your life?
WHY have a why?
Having and knowing your powerful reason to do something can help immensely in motivating you to take the actions you need to to get there.
It is especially important when you are taking those first steps that will help you become the person you want to be, because this can often bring up uncomfortable feelings (fear of the unknown in particular). It is also really helpful when things come up which make us want to give up or revert back to old habits (which do not bring us closer to being the person we want to be).
3) Become The Person You Want to be - Create a Vision of What You Want to be
Ask yourself what you want to change: get clear on how you want your life and yourself to be. What is different? What things would help you reach this place? What BOLD actions would you need to take each day to get you there?
Having an overall vision can really help keep us motivated, like the WHY, when we may be wanting to go back to old habits OR not put in the work.
4) Become The Person You Want to be - Start Doing What This Version of You Would do
Now, stop waiting and start doing. What would this version of you be doing? What steps would they be taking to get them to reach their goals?
Start small and create the habit or taking action each day to start bringing you closer to become the person you want to be.
When different situations present themselves that are relevant to your goals: ask yourself “what would the version of me I want to be do?”
5) Become The Person You Want to be - Embody and Become This Person Through The Way You Talk to Yourself
How do you want to speak to yourself? Often we can be judgemental and unkind in the way we speak about ourselves. It is very important to unlearn this self talk and replace it with kind and helpful thoughts.
How would the version of you that you want to be speak to themselves and about themselves? If things did not go to plan or they made a mistake: would they think unhelpful thoughts or would they recognize the growth and learning in these mistakes?
Start embodying this version of you, there is no one standing in your way (apart from yourself).
In Closing:
To become the person you want to be it takes work but it is important to recognize how much power you hold over this. You CAN do this and you can start today if you choose to! Pick one thing to start doing today.
